Kupa'a Mau Outrigger Canoe Club has implemented mandatory safety procedures, which are to be observed by each paddler anytime a Kupa'a Mau Outrigger Canoe or any canoe in Kupa'a Mau's possession is paddled on any body of water. A thorough understanding and observance of the safety procedures outlined in the Safety Manual is of paramount importance. Please read the entire document and sign and return the "Accept & Acknowledge" page to the KMOCC Secretary, Mishi Gomez.

Prestigious Award presented to Susie Nemeth

Congratulations to our very own Susie Nemeth, 2008 recipient of the A.E. Toots Minvielle Memorial Paddle Award. Cheance Adair, Race Committee Chair presented Susie with this beautiful koa wood paddle at the 2008 Catalina Channel Crossing US Championships outrigger canoe race.

The late Toots was the father of the Moloka'i race and brought Hawai'ian canoe racing to California in 1959. Toots also founded the International Hawai'ian Canoe Racing Association (IHCRA), an organization that brought nations of paddlers together.

The paddle was originally given to him when he was inducted into the Hawai'ian Sports Hall of Fame http://hawaiisportshalloffame.com/xminv.htm. It was later given to IHCRA who presented the paddle to the Southern California paddling community in the early ‘90s. A symbol of dedication and hard work, the A.E. Toots Minivielle Memorial Paddle Award recognizes and celebrates members of the paddling community who strive for the continued growth and development of the sport.

USAA Pendleton Cup Outrigger Challenge - April 29, 2008

Kupa'a Mau OCC will be working with Camp Pendleton to host the first USAA Pendleton Cup Outrigger Challenge on Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at 0800 at the Del Mar Marina.

Practice Information

Summer Season

Kupa'a Mau Outrigger Canoe Club practices on Mondays and Wednesdays at 1730 hours (5:30 pm) and non-racing Saturdays at 0800 hours (8:00 am) from early March 2008 until the end of September 2008.

Keiki (Youth) Practice Information

Kupa'a Mau Youth (age 8 to age 19) practice on Mondays and Wednesdays at 1530 hours (3:30 pm) from early April through the end of July. Please contact the keiki coach for more information.

Practice Site Location

Kupa'a Mau Outrigger Canoe Club has found a home for our canoes and our paddlers at Del Mar Beach & Jetty, Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton (north San Diego County, California).

Del Mar Beach is located at the southern end of Camp Pendleton and offers miles of magnificent surf. One of North County San Diego's best kept secrets, Del Mar Beach is one of Southern California's most exclusive surf breaks. A breakwater pushes almost a mile into the Pacific, and rolls in with authority. The beach features a boat basin, restrooms, hot showers and barbecue pits and is clean, quiet, and relaxing.

Del Mar Beach is open to the military, their dependents, retirees, and their guests. Access to the base is available for paddlers through the front gate of Camp Pendleton (there are several other gates for entry into Camp Pendleton, but you can only get a temporary pass at the main gate – you may be asked to show your valid drivers license, proof of insurance and proof of registration when entering).

Directions:

Interstate 5 runs along Camp Pendleton.

From the south: drive north toward Oceanside and take the Oceanside Harbor/ Camp Pendleton exit to the main gate.

From the north: drive toward Oceanside and take the Camp Pendleton exit to the main gate.

All:

After entering the front gate, you will be on Vandegrift Road.
Turn left at Wire Mountain Road (the first stoplight) which takes you on a bridge over the I-5 (you are now on A Street).
Turn left on 12th Street
Follow the signs to Del Mar Beach, home of Kupa'a Mau Outrigger Canoe Club.

What to Bring to Practice

PAPERWORK TO GET ON BASE: Valid drivers license, proof of insurance and proof of registration
PADDLE: Of course, you need your paddle. If you do not have one, we can loan you a club paddle.
DRINK: Many paddlers like to bring a small bottle of water or sports drink to carry with them in the boat.
HEADBAND: Bring a headband, hairband, or hat of some sort to keep your hair out of your face.
A DRY T-SHIRT: It's up to you, but most paddlers prefer to have a dry towel and a T-shirt or sweatshirt to put on after practice.
SUNSCREEN: Especially on race day at the beach and any daytime practices.
PADDLING CLOTHES: You'll see a lot of paddlers wearing neoprene (wet suit material) shorts, short or long sleeve dryfit/polyester shirts and flip flops/surf booties. Neoprene is popular with paddlers because it cushions the hard seats of the canoe and minimizes chafing.

Happy 1st Birthday Kupa'a Mau Outrigger Canoe Club

We have accomplished quite a bit in a year's time and each of us should feel very proud of our efforts. Here are a few of the highlights.

March 3, 2007 - Accepted as a one year probationary club with SCORA
May - September 2007 - Raced most of the season
June 23, 2007 - Blessed our first canoe, Makua Kane at the Ironman Championship Race (beautiful Bradley Lightening built by Coach Charlie)
July 23, 2007 - Received private organization status aboard Camp Pendleton
September 8-9, 2007 - Held a successful raffle fundraiser at the Catalina Championships race
September 22-23, 2007 - Participated in the USMC Single Marine Program Regional Beach Bash & Regatta
October 2007 - Published in Pacific Paddler Magazine
February 2008 - Susie Nemeth had an opportunity to plug our club at Commander Wives Training at Quantico

A few things to look forward to as we move into our 2nd year:

2008 - Building a Bradley canoe and acquiring additional club equipment
2008 - Actively participate in has many USMC activities as possible
2008 - Build Base awareness and recruitment efforts
Early April 2008 - Paddling Clinic at Del Mar Beach
April 29, 2008 - Pendleton Cup Series Regatta
May - September, 2008 - A successful racing season

DEADLINE FOR INTENT TO PARTICIPATE IS DECEMBER 31, 2007. A non-refundable $30.00 check or money order made out to SCORA MUST be sent to Lori for each paddler and MUST be postmarked no later than December 31, 2007.

From August 1, 2008 through August 9, 2008, California will host the 13th International Va'a (Outrigger Canoe) World Championship at Lake Natoma near Sacramento.

Kupa'a Mau members who are interested in racing in this world class event should contact Coach Charlie to let him know of your interest and to ask him to please contact SCORA's IVF Representative, Lori Kitahata.

California crews have a limited number of lanes available to them for racing. If more crews sign up and pay their deposits than there are lanes for, SCORA will organize time trials during the summer.

If you plan to compete in OC1 divisions, start practicing your rudderless skills, because there is no rudder-full racing at this competition.

Event volunteers are need too. So if you're interested in helping out, please get in touch with Lori.

Competitors and volunteers must be available for the duration of the event.

Winter Paddling Resumes (off-season)

Kupa'a Mau Outrigger Canoe Club will be starting its off-season paddling program on Saturday, October 27, 2007. Practices will be held each Saturday at 0900 hours (9:00 a.m.) through the end of February.

We welcome anyone who is interested in trying the sport. No experience needed!

We will provide all equipment necessary.
Please wear comfortable exercise clothing.
Be prepared to get a little wet.
Plan on spending about 2 hours at the beach.

Please fill out the SCORA Release of Liability form and bring it down to the beach with you on your first day.

The start of the SoCalOceanRacing Winter Series is nearing.

2007-2008 Race Schedule

Categories include OC1, OC2, Surfski, Double Surfski, Paddleboard and Stand Up Paddle Board. The Winter Series Committee is in the process of establishing a points system for junior paddlers on OC1's.

Expect $20 race fees, most hosts provide T-shirts to the first 100 registered, lunch, 3 safety boats, great race courses, awards and raffle prizes.

Marine Corps Outrigger Canoe Race - Recap

Wow….what an absolutely fabulous weekend. I can’t remember when I had this much fun.

A special Mahalo to Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Semper Fit and the Single Marine Program for the opportunity they afforded us. This was a remarkable experience and we enjoyed being there and working with all of you (Danielle West, Sergeant Major Wayne Bell, Eddie Hadley and our own John Preston).

In attendance were Single Marines from the Marine Corps Logistics Base, Barstow, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego and the Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, AZ. Thank you to all of you for a great time and for allowing us to share this sport we love, paddling outrigger canoes. Looks like a few people enjoyed themselves enough to practice with us in the near future. We look forward to paddling with you soon.
